The Nightmare Machine, New Single from The Double Headed Seagulls

The Nightmare Machine

The Nightmare Machine, or Apprehension Engine, is a unique device designed for horror film sound design. It utilizes mechanical components to generate eerie noises.

Created by film composer Mark Korven and his collaborator Tony Duggan-Smith, this one-of-a-kind instrument produces sounds so unsettling, it elevates a horror film from kinda scary to truly terrifying.

The Nightmare Machine's wholly-analog nature makes it stand out; Many sounds put in horror films today are entirely digital in nature and not created on the spot. The Nightmare Machine is a live beast by comparison.

I’ve release three Nightmare Machine videos so far (below).

Kaffir Piano, by The Double Headed Seagulls

Kaffir Piano employs a variety of unconventional production techniques to make its less-than-two-minute track stand out. It is bass-focused, but not to the point of overshadowing the other elements. The atmosphere it creates lingers over the guitar and bass, perhaps capturing that moment when you come home from work at 6 PM, and it's already dark. You're home, but the day has slipped away.

Evocative analogies aside, Kaffir Piano draws the listener a tad bit closer to themselves, as all of The Double Headed Seagulls’ music tends to do. It's great for sparking your next creative idea or perhaps planning the perfect prank to pull on your closest friends.

The Double Headed Seagulls have never shied away from a tightly focused, harmonically experimental sound. Much of their music evokes a constantly shifting musical undercurrent. Flowery language aside, you can certainly count on The Double Headed Seagulls to push harmonic boundaries but in a very understated way. Kaffir Piano does just that.
